Why Great Leaders Never Shift Blame
by Michael Hoffman
As leaders, it’s tempting to deflect responsibility when things go wrong, especially when the mistake isn’t directly your fault. However, effective leadership is about ownership.
Today, a minute error was made by a teammate in my direct report’s team. Although the error was insignificant, the learning can be noteworthy.
The teammate had mislabeled a business meeting (BM) as a new business meeting (NBM), which in our world means a meeting with a new business that we have not worked with before. Nothing catastrophic and quickly corrected. My direct report, rather than simply acknowledging the error, however, pointed a finger at a member of her team. She, hopefully, learned a valuable lesson.
Here’s why blaming others, especially your direct reports, can harm both you and your team.
- Accountability Sets You Apart: Strong leaders own their team’s successes and failures. When you take responsibility, it shows that you are in control and committed to growth. Shifting blame erodes trust and undermines your authority.
- Protect Your Team’s Morale: Blame creates fear and kills collaboration. When your team knows you have their back, they feel safe to innovate and take risks. This leads to better results in the long run.
- Focus on Solutions, Not Fault: Instead of focusing on who made the mistake, great leaders look at why it happened and how to fix it. This solution-oriented mindset drives progress and prevents future errors.
- Your Leadership is Always on Display: Blaming your team can damage your reputation. People look up to leaders who can handle adversity and solve problems without pointing fingers.
Remember, leadership is about owning the process and the results, good or bad. By taking responsibility, you foster trust, improve team dynamics, and create a culture of accountability and growth.
In the end, great leaders know that sometimes you have to take a hit for the team. It’s a sign of strength, not weakness, and it earns the respect that drives loyalty and long-term success.
